Freshwater turtles can be found in Peninsular Malaysia in 18 different species. However, due to various dangers, the majority of them are currently endangered. Pollution of rivers and lakes by industrial and agricultural activities is one of the biggest challenges. There's also the risk of hazardous fishing gear. Turtles are also a victim of poaching for the pet trade. Turtle egg consumption has also historically led to a significant reduction in turtle species numbers and local populations.
